EDIT: I shall choose the 4 best looking ones, and Oppo will choose who wins. Winner gets Internet Points, my respect and a chance to play with the Hydra on the Citroen (if they are willing to fly to Brazil).
Rules:
You must own/drive/have access to the car.
Entries must include picture (no, you don't need to go take one, use google or whatever) .
The winner will be chosen based on looks alone. The quality of the gearbox and brand of the car won't matter.
Both auto and manual are allowed.

BMW's ZF8 shifter. I've got it in my M235i. Not only does it look good, but it feels great to use. It reflects the same feeling as the indicator/wiper arms. The paddles (that's included right?) have a metal back to them, so they get ice cold when the A/C is on. Again, they have the same tactile sensation as the rest of the controls in the car.

By no means, I know many people on oppo have nice cars, but there is a possibility of someone not reading the rules and choosing a gearbox they like, such as this wonderful thing. I was just checking.

It's over the top and over styled. It's meant to look as if it's been stripped to the bare essentials as it were but in fact the various tubes and brackets have been added for the sake of it.

Until you try to drive after the car has been sitting in the sun for a few minutes, at which point you achieve burnination in your hands....

How long have you had the M235i? I was thinking of getting one with a manual, an LSD and the M Performance Exhaust. What do you think? Any regrets yet or do you absolutely love it?
![]() 08/26/2014 at 12:10 |
|
oh, when Lexus used to love manuals.......
![]() 08/26/2014 at 12:14 |

Never burned my hand on it once. But I do use a sun-shade
![]() 08/26/2014 at 12:14 |

Absolutely zero regrets. Word of warning; don't tick any options. They're pointless and expensive. I've got the basic car, and I'm happy that's what I went with. Leather and the CWP is standard in Canada. Those are safe bets, but you won't need anything else.
The LSD is on my to-do list, but I really don't see the point in the M exhaust. The standard one is specially tuned for the car as it is, and it sounds great.
It's a great car. Don't even look at the 4 series or Audi S3. Go with the M235i, you'll be happy. Do it, do it, do it, then join me for a track day.
Edit: going on 3 weeks with it now.

up until last year, and 2000/2001, they've always had a manual option.=(

I quite like the simplicity of the 2008+ Vue's optional "sport" shifter.
But the standard one like what's in our Vue is nice too.

Here are a few shift knobs I really like.
Machined this for my girlfriend.
Machined this for a buddies WRX
And here's the one on my S4. Its got a great feel and the leather / metal combo feels really nice.

I feel like a personal shift knob is one of the best mods you can do to a car. It's a true sign that you loved your car when you don't include the shift knob when it's for sale. And you really haven't lived until you have felt a Password JDM shift knob. Albeit one of my least favorite websites to deal with, they actually got something right.
Pictured isn't my car, but it was the only picture I found of the color I have. Also you can change the color of the ring inside the top!
![]() 08/26/2014 at 13:00 |

After driving a couple of BMWs with this shifter, I found the ergonomics of shifting to be a bit poor and hard to pick up. The shifter did feel nice, but I don't think it's visually attractive.
![]() 08/26/2014 at 13:04 |
|
I'm a big fan of mine. The knob is from an S2000, it was custom polished and then the red and black lettering was hand painted. The boot is a black suede with red stitching to match my seats, with a silver ring that ties nicely into the knob. The actual lever itself was painted black to separate the silver ring and the silver knob. Its nothing particularly fancy, is in essence a copy of what Honda did in the type R, so nothing original, just simple and I like it and I made it so it's like a labour of love thing.

To each their own. It definitely takes some getting used to. Also, it's nice that the sequential shifter is correct (read: push for lower gear, pull for higher)
![]() 08/26/2014 at 13:21 |
|
I think when the sequential shifter is correctly oriented, you know the manufacturer took the car seriously :D

hopped in the SIL's BMW, got so confused I just stared at the shifter for a bit.
![]() 08/26/2014 at 13:28 |

Well the story goes...We were just friends and she had asked me to machine her a shifter for some time, so when her birthday time came around she ended up leaving me the car for the weekend and my friends and i planned accordingly. I worked at a machine shop so a little ingenuity and some very interesting fixtures and a few hours later we had this thing mounted. It was so floppy and it changed radio stations everytime you shifted or went over a bump...
We parked the car and a day later when she came back she was not too thrilled to say the least....

![]() 08/26/2014 at 13:59 |

did you also make her what she had asked for so you could slip that on after the joke was over?
![]() 08/26/2014 at 14:00 |

Yea I did. I put up another reply on this thread somewhere showing the shift knob i machined her as well as another one i machined for a buddy.

yeah I know... Looked at them and politely declined to test drive when they told me I could use the +/- buttons and make it a manual. Wanted to yell at him though.

![]() 08/26/2014 at 16:22 |

Eh, not really. To people new to shifting, it's pretty confusing. Furthermore, after I put on the aftermarket knob, it gets super hot in the summer and super cold in the winter.

How is this even a contest?!
I have an estranged uncle with a '71 dodge challenger with the pistol grip transmission, and he's pretty nice with offering rides, so I can technically claim that I have access to this car.

This is a retrofit to replace the OEM "gooseneck" one - part is from the new M5; knob is the same as the 1M.

Do you know the origin of this gif? I looked forever...
![]() 08/26/2014 at 20:21 |

Wait what? I was sure that was an E9x M3! I had a 2011 M3 and the shifter looked exactly like that, along with the boot and surroundings...

Iirc, he has a Mclaren mp4-12c, and I think two ford GT500's.
![]() 08/26/2014 at 21:27 |

The Mclaren doesn't have a gear shifter, and GT500's would actually be nice competition.
![]() 08/26/2014 at 21:32 |

You're correct about the 12c but I actually have 2 GTs, not GT500s.
